A Cave for a Bibliophile

October 12th, 2007

Sakura Adachi proposed to combine book shelves and reading space for engaged bibliophiles. Also, there are variants which provide space for children and kennels. See them all inside. The price for the ‘cave’ book shelves is $7,000.

I’d love one of those in our lounge! Pity about the $7,000 price-tag…

  • stevo Says: October 13th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

As an avid reader, I’d love to have such a bookcase, but the price is simply… stupid. You may as well just buy a nice bookshelf and chair separately, and still have enough money leftover for books. =)

  • santos Says: October 13th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

One of the most stupid idea I’ve even seen. For an average person: ¿how wide has to be the bookcase?

  • ShinigamiMiu Says: October 14th, 2007 at 1:03 am

I think this is a lovely idea, it means you can have a comfortable seat RIGHT next to your books without having a chair sticking into the middle of the room. I wish they were less expensive as i would love one of these!!!

  • lux.aeterna Says: October 14th, 2007 at 2:10 am

They are nice… but I would just make that myself for that kind of money.

  • Jerry Petraeus Says: October 14th, 2007 at 6:49 am

Lordy, both you and Adachi are idiots! Did you even think before you posted this? What an abominable idea.

  • Dave Says: October 14th, 2007 at 9:07 am

Ignore the fools! It is a great idea for a bookshelf. If only it had built in stereo speakers and the ability to recline, it would be perfect.

  • Luna Loveborn Says: October 15th, 2007 at 8:38 am

Really I love curling on my bed with a good book. *purr*

  • Saumav Says: October 17th, 2007 at 7:29 am

Yeah Ignore the fools… They just go on posting scams without properly noticing the wonderful idea.
This is a really innovative idea… and innovation is always encouraged.

  • eamonn Says: October 23rd, 2007 at 7:15 pm

Nice idea, but the price is too high, and, while sitting in it, you can’t actually reach any books.

  • David Mackey Says: October 25th, 2007 at 1:27 am

    LoL. That is awesome!

  • nobbywebfoot Says: November 11th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

A very good idea but slightly wrong shape for lazy or ancient bibliophile, nowhere to rest a book and for that money the knee support is not right. As for the cost, a reasonably able handyman will be able to construct one using laminated thin plywood, foam plastic and pvc. Being both lazy and ancient I would just sling a hammock between the case ends with, of course a slave to hand me books or read me to sleep!

  • Paul Says: November 11th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

This is a stupid idea. Like eamonn says, you can’t reach any books… well you could reach them but you wouldn’t know what you’re getting unless you get out to look first.

The seating space looks uncomfortable and is not adjustable.

All you people that think this is cool: you’re damn lucky it’s too expensive to buy, or you all would have gone out and wasted your money on a gimmicky piece of crap that would have just end up wasting space.

  • Axel Says: November 14th, 2007 at 10:17 am

I’m sorry, but that is one of the stupidest pieces of furniture I’ve ever seen.
Not only is it ugly, you’re wasting precious book storing space. It doesn’t even look very comfortable.
I’m not even going to talk about the price tag, we all know why it is ridicilous.

  • Mystikan Says: November 15th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

Considering that I could build that for around $300 – $400, that price tag is frankly outright extortion. For $7000 I could additionally build in a computer with the screen sited in front of the person’s face, an adjustable keyboard/mouse shelf, surround sound speakers and pneumatic adjustable seating in genuine leather! I could even have the seat slide out sideways on an extensible rail for easy access to both the seat and the books as well. THEN it might be worth the price tag.

But as it stands, it’s just an grossly overpriced and badly designed piece of shit.

  • Paul Abrams Says: November 25th, 2007 at 8:14 pm

    Well said, Mystikan!

Hey your version sounds pretty good. You should market it!

  • stefano Says: December 18th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

That is really a great design idea, but I think $7,000 is a little overpriced.

    for 7 thousand
i could have the nicest chair, couch, lamp and collection of books.
plus a couple of quid left over for snacks.
    (!)

  • Julie Says: January 2nd, 2008 at 1:37 am

The price is too high and one I would never pay. I could remake that shelf a hell of a lot cheaper with more flare. Its clever and there’s now doubt abou that.

  • Paul Says: January 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 am

Why does everyone keep saying this is a great design idea? It’s a STUPID design idea.

    Julie said:

“It’s clever and there’s now doubt about that”

There’s now doubt about it being clever? When was there NOT doubt about it being clever?

  • Paul Says: January 2nd, 2008 at 2:43 am

The seat looks very uncomfortable – it’s not even big enough to stretch your legs!

When you’re sitting, you can’t even see what’s on the bookshelf!

The stupid design gives you less than half the book storage space of a regular shelf!

    Dogs don’t read!

The outrageous price tag just makes us laugh harder at the idiots willing to spend their cash on this “clever idea”. Divide the price 100 times ($70) and I still would not buy it!

    It’s a stupid idea!

    There’s no doubt about that!

  • Omphalos Says: January 22nd, 2008 at 10:36 pm

This is the silliest thing I have ever seen. Who wants to have a seat right up against the wall like that? And does anyone really have enough room to put it in a room away from a wall? And what bibliophile wants shelf space sacrificed like that? But most important, what idiot thinks that there is $7K of labor and materials in that ugly and impractical thing? It looks way too small too. I mean, I’m sure that 4′11″ Asian girl has plenty of head room, but come on!

  • Kaisa Says: February 19th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

I would just like to state there is a big difference between a stupid design and a stupid idea. Stupid designs get redesigned but its the stupid ideas that lead us to the innovations we have now. This design is very stupid, little head room not very comfortable and ridiculously expensive, it was bad both marketing and engineering wise. However the idea of having your books so close to you when you are reading them is a fantastic idea. They should have worked at the design board a little longer, and looked at cost as well.
