Orange Fight in Italy

Every February in the town of Ivrea a famous battle of oranges is held. Thousands of townspeople, divided into nine combat teams, violently throw oranges at each other. So many oranges are unjustifiably spoiled, but I’d like to take part in this!

Hi guys, i am from Ivrea; the carnival ended yesterday, we had 3 days of “battle”. I am not an arancere (is called arancere the one that take part to the battle in a team) but i’d like to emphasize a pair of things….
Sedex, about some things, i agree with you, Italy does not appear as civilised (expecially talking about our governement) but sure, not in this one. Our carnival is, believe it or not, a mix of culture and traditions that are *hundreds* years old. I don’t know where are you from, but i think you should put some millenniums of history on your back, before talking about italian traditions.
And, no, i don’t think that those oranges were sent to Africa if not used here. Unfortunately a lot of products of agriculture are destroyed in a less spectacular ways every season in order to meet the quotes imposed by European & markets rules. Those rules and laws (in one word: money intrests) are the real shame.
    Great Funtasticus! Keep goin’!
    Thanx

Papermacho, sorry… my comment was humorous.
I admire Italy, and the ancient Rome’s contributions to modern civilization.

Sedex, no problem :) Every year, a lot of those people are wounded by oranges in the battle… nothing of particulary serious, but it’s normal, in a fight, although a friendly one. So, many people every year, people that don’t know the whole story and without understand the traditions, make a lot of noise talking about civilisations and public order and so….
Sure you are not one of them, my post only was intended to underline some points from the “inside”.
pch_kid, ansewering to your question: every team that is involved in the “fight” buys the oranges with the quote payed from everyone that want to take part in the battle. Answering to R.King: sure! ;)

Good Game, We play these type games when we are child-hood.

But we call these games like base ball. We hit the other person with the ball.
