What are They Doing?

February 6th, 2008

The answer is inside!

smuggling001_5

They are smuggling! That’s the border between Columbia and Venezuela – petrol and gas go to Columbia in exchange for cocaine, presumably!

I doubt it’s for cocaine. More than likely, it’s to profit on the black market since Hugo Chavez has placed price controls on nearly everything which has resulted in shortages.

Who knew smuggling was so fun.

  • BillyGoat Says: February 8th, 2008 at 3:28 am

    No, it’s definitely for cocaine.

    @PhoneBill

Ehh, How in the hell? Way to politicize something that has nothing to do with anything.

They are smuggling INTO Colombia from Venezuela (did you forget that Colombia is the cocaine producer not Venezuela?.) So explain to me how the Venezuelan Black Market has anything to do with it, when they aren’t selling their products in Venezuela… They are selling/trading them in Colombia.

Some people are lacking some serious basic reading comprehension skills.

    Pfft! Get a clue.

gasoline is an important part of the cocaine production process.

  • Mikeee Says: February 8th, 2008 at 1:41 pm

I’m pretty sure at least the jugs might be full of gasoline.
Due to nationalization of all oil fields and refineries and government caps on gas prices, the Venezuelans pay about €0.03 (three eurocents) for a liter of gas (about 11 eurocents for a gallon).
My uncle who lives there told me the price in 2005 but that might’ve increased slightly in the mean time.

These crazy! Obviously contraband, but it will not be exchanging for cocaine as you say! Perhaps these crazy people like you and leave badly tarnished country that is still fighting for drug trafficking, do you have evidence to support that are being exchanged for cocaine? That is smuggling that is purchased at a lower price and then resold and earn a little extra money. But never for swapped for cocaine.

We send this link to the house where he lives nariño President Uribe have to think about your statements .. Represarías to take the case.

    Heketi,

Why would you say pinting out the shortages in Venezuela has nothing to do with anything? If these are pictures of goods being passed between Colombia and Venezuela, and there is no way to confirm the direction of travel, is it not valid to point out possible causes and effects?

Whomever posted the pictures used the word “presumably”, how are you so sure they are smuggling this into Colombia for drugs? I simply offered an alternative, it’s not taking a political stab at anyone to point out that Hugo Chavez’s price controls has resulted in shortages.

It is very likely that basic goods, like Colgate toothpaste, may very well be smuggled into Venezuela. Just do a simple search on Colombian smuggling into Venezuela and you will see that this is a big problem.

I will concede one point, ‘Mavesa’ is a Venezuelan company, so it is very possible that these products are leaving Venezuela, but none of us took these pictures, none of us were there, and none of us can say, without a doubt, what they represent.
