I have just returned from 3 weeks in Taiwan. It seems the older male population cherishes this “habit”. I couldn’t bring myself to try, as all my Twn friends told me the taste was not good, but the “high”was a mix between getting drunk and a huge caffeine hit. Some of the girls were oh so hot though and it certainly is a interesting piece of Taiwanese culture. I am going back next February, maybe I’ll try one….maybe I won’t……

It is pronounced “bing lang” in chinese. Hmmm, it doesn’t taste like licorice unless you put something inside that changes the flavor, such as ginger, mint, or licorice. It tastes more like… green coconut husk and jungle leaves if anyone has tried it.
The leaf surrounding the beetle nut gives a bloddy red color to your saliva (and stains the teeth red) when you are chewing the beetle nut, you must spit the saliva/juice out during the chew.
Some countries in the Pacific use calcium lime powder from dead corals (burnt to ash dead corals) for an extra tingle in the mouth. Tabacco is sometimes put inside beetlenuts in those areas as well, for that extra kick.
Chewing beetle nut has a similar feeling to smoking cigarettes and heats you up a bit. Good for cold weather.

it isnt candy, its a nut with a root in the middle. people chew it and it tastes like licorice. it is cancerous in the mouth like chewing tobacco but after chewing it, it makes beer taste really really sweet. translated in english “beatle nut”
