Better be thin in Japan

With real estate at a premium in Japan builders have to be creative to maximize any space they can get.  So they build things very narrow and just hope no fatties show up.

Not good if you’re claustrophobic, like me.

It is a lot like Amsterdam. I remember one hotel there had a staircase that was practically a ladder. Getting our bags up that was a real chore. That was ten years ago. I don’t think I could manage it today.

Japan has a considerably high suicide rate, and I begin to think many suicides are motivated by claustrofobia

there is an extremly thin hotel building in Montreal it’s about 12 stories, completely uncomfortable.

Why won’t they team up and build REALLY REALLY TALL buildings. like 1 km in the air (or 0.7-0.8 miles). That way they could afford having more spacious appartments because for the XXX square meters (/feet) of land they could pack up to X40-X50 times more total square meters /feet of living area on a vertial level.

I still think it would be cheaper to build upwards than horizontal, in Japan’s case …

They have frequent earthquakes and typhoons, so skyscrapers are not ideal.

I used to work in a very thing office building, it’s not that bad inside but compared to Western standards, sure. But in Tokyo there is no place at all. Even if you own your own house one day (many being as pointed above in the photos), you usually have the neighboring houses at maybe 30 centimeters, you can basically open the window and touch the house next to you or see what the people are doing.
I was good friends with my neighbor when I was little, we used to climb into each other’s rooms because they were so close.
Plus, apartments and houses are very, very expensive. Standard family apartments in Europe look like castles to us, we envy you

I`m not rich, I`m from a south american country. I live alone in an apartment that has 3 bedrooms , 2 bathrooms, a big living room and a kitchen. I fit in the middle class actually. I guess there could be 20 japanese people living in the space I occupy daily? I so never want to live in japan…..

That’ll be more and more a reality to a lot of people who are now accustomed to space. Over population. Makes you think twice about having babies – should anyway. Scares the hell out of me as I’m an introvert and a little claustrophobic, so having people constantly around is not an option and I need space! Good thing there is always that option of suicide.

Damn, I though apartments in NYC were small. A few of them don’t look that bad though, they seem like just one room on top of the other. I would die if I lived in that first picture though, way to claustrophobic not to mention I’m pretty sure that would be some sort of fire hazard or something in the US. I remeber when we were adding an addition onto my house a few years ago the inspector told us our doorway was too small and it was twice as wide as that.

Something that was unknown to me till today. I think these are some of the or may be only thinest buildings in the world that have residents too. I think we should think over getting thin before planing to visit Japan. Thanks for the post…

I tried visiting in Japan once, since my dad used to work there. Sure the country is okay but it’s too darn expensive!! They also have a lot of weird customs and stuff and the stuff they always shows on tv are not always correct. Most japanese nowadays are kinda disrespectful. Well, in my own observation anyway

Funny thing about Japan, they pack themselves into these gigantic cities, and alot of the country is open, and pristine…..by design, and sort of short sighted really…….

Also looking at Google earth, there are a ton, literally thousands of golf courses…..EVERYWHERE in Japan, yet they can’t seem to NOT live like rats in a crowded sewer? This seems really stupid…..just as twisted as Americans needing to always move AWAY from crowded urban centers…..oh humans….

well these aren’t “normal” by Japanese standards.
I think you will find more bachelors and “salarymen” live in the city centers… but others (like myself) live out in the spacious country. the city is where the money is, hence the crowding. most people dgaf as they spend more time at work than being at home. I’m sure if their work place supplied a bed.. they wouldn’t even live elsewhere :P

There have been tv shows here talking about the strange thin buildings or oddly shaped… one feature was about a man who designed his house to look like a cracked egg… the toilet was in the living room… with NO doors. hmm.
