I don’t get Japanese style

Japanese girls are doing one hell of a job at starting fashion trends.  They are painting up their faces and this is catching on all over the place.  What happened to sexy school girl outfits and Hello Kitty backpacks?

All of these girls are ganguro…there are so many (and much better) japanese makeup styles and fashions… try Lolita, or gyaruu!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the Japanese actually copied that trend so as to make fun of all the really tan bitches in America.

Copy? Yeah, kind of. Make fun of? No.

it was intended as an ironic commentary on American pop culture; our standards of beauty carried out to an extreme. The eye-makeup is usually designed to make their eyes appear brighter and rounder, but they know it looks fake and that the whole look is ridiculous by most peoples’ standards. So in a way, they are making fun of us and our values. Some of these girls of course are simply following a trend, but the ironic statement about the worship of American trash in other countries is self-evident, same as in Emo’s statement on the transit between playful childhood and nihilistic adulthood. Photos which appear to be taken by American girls are just funny because a) you’re doing it wrong and b) you’re simultaneously making fun of, but still buying into, your own superficial culture.

it’s called “manba” or “yamanba” depending on the sort of makeup. it kind of a horribly advanced stage of the “ganguro” trend, which someone mentioned before. ganguro, which is no longer in fashion, was a take on californian style, while manba is just disturbing. a little bit of history: the girl pictured with the pink and orange jacket and tan platforms is buriteri, the first ever documented individual to follow this trend. alot of these girls actually don’t look japanese at all.

that’s my knowledge for today. :D sorry if it was a bit too much, but i love this stuff.

My brother-in-law lives in Japan (marine) and we’ve actually talked about this. He said it’s a form of rebellion against the Japanese standard of beauty. That the japanese culture values quiet girls with pale skin and very natural make-up, so these girls deliberately go the opposite way. Kinda like girls with piercings and spiked hair here.

In Japan this is so old it’s no longer a fashion. Most of the girls aren’t even Japanese in these photos. In fact, most of the photos look like they’re taken at the same party Caucasian girls are throwing in Japan .
